i want to bake
This is an emergency bake sale to benefit the people of Minneapolis and Palestine. How can you help? Bake something! It’s a bake sale! We’re collaborating with La Rosa in Lavapies to sell homemade baked goods to raise funds.
We need baked goods by 4 p.m. this Saturday, February 7. Can you help out? We’re hoping to have an impressive supply of American-style baked goods. Think cookies, muffins, pound cake, coffee cake, fudge, brownies and blondies, cupcakes, whoopie pies, scones, donuts, bagels … bring your American specialities to Madrid! Sign-up to bake here.
Here’s why we’re doing this: The people are winning in the streets in Minneapolis but the need for mutual aid persists. Many people are too afraid to leave their homes to procure necessary supplies or medical care. Women are giving birth at home. Schools have gone online. Diabetics are diluting or forgoing their insulin. Bake sale proceeds will directly benefit individuals making home visits to provide medical care and resources in the Twin Cities. At the same time, the Rafah border crossing has reopened but many Palestinians in need of care do not have the resources to make the crossing. Both of these struggles are connected.
FAQ for bakers
What do you need?
Classic American baked goods, individually packaged in sterile containers (ziplocks are ideal). Sign-up to bake here. No raw eggs please - everything needs to be ok at room temperature. When you are baking, please wash your hands frequently, use clean implements, and keep food safety in mind. We’re fundraising FOR medical care, not trying to send people to get it! Bake as if you were baking for someone with a sensitive immune system. Please record ALL of your ingredients on the sign-up sheet, so we can protect customers with allergies.
When do you need it?
Baked goods can either be delivered Friday evening to an address near Atocha, or to La Rosa by 4 pm Saturday. Email Rachel at rachelmward@gmail.com for the address.
How much should I make?
Bro, as much as you can. It’s up to you, but if you could make something that serves 8 - 12, that’d be great. You’re more than welcome to make more than one thing.
How does pricing work?
We’re doing a pick-your-price/donations model, so if you’re baking, you don’t have to worry about that at all!
Who gets the money?
We’re fundraising for mutual aid for Minneapolis and Palestine. In Gaza, the genocide continues, and families desperately need funds to make the crossing to Egypt for medical care. In Minneapolis, medical workers are making home visits to help people who cannot leave their homes, because Black and and Brown people are being hunted by ICE. Both are part of the larger struggle for liberation for all people, to put people before profits.
Can I come to the bake sale?
PLEASE DO! And bring friends. If you’re baking, show off your skills and share the event in your group chats.
Will I be reimbursed for ingredients?
Nope. Your flour and your time are your contributions to the fight for our Constitution, against ICE, and for a safe and free Palestine.
I can come late /I’m not sure … /Can you help ….?
No. We need folks to be reliable in this moment of emergency. Please try to troubleshoot your own issues. If you can’t commit, please contribute as a customer, or spread the word within your community.
